Default problem with my Canon SLR

Since a few days a have a serious problem with my SLR (Canon EOS 300
with a Tokina AT-X 242 AF (24-200mm)) lens. It only operates at the
wides apertures (over the whole zoom range). When I at smaller
apertures the 'empty battery' sign starts to blink and the camera does
not operate anymore. It resets again after a short time. New
batteries, cleansing of the contact points does not solve the problem.
Without a lens the camera seems to operate well. Has anyone
suggestions to solve this problem??

Does the camera work with a different lens?

Good question, I haven't tried yet. This is what I'm gonna do next.

Sure... dump the Canon and get a real camera.

Suggests a sticky aperture and/or motor taking lots of current. Try a Canon
lens. Get the lens repaired.
