Any opinions on Tamron and Sigma wide angle digital SLR lenses versus the
camera manufacturers own glass? How do they compare, and are there any
reviews out there?

You'll find plenty - from one extreme to the other...

How do they compare

Some Sigma/Tamron/Tokina are very good, rivalling OEM quality, IMHO.
Some are execrable, and only useful when technical image quality is not
a prime consideration.

Just recently, I chose the Tokina 12-24mm (for small-sensor DSLRs),
and have been very happy with it. I played with the Sigma 12-24mm a
bit over a year ago and liked it reasonably well on a small-sensor
DSLR but didn't test the image beyond those limits; and it's enough
more expensive that I chose the Tokina to actually buy. I haven't
tried the Sigma 10-20, or any Tamron offering in this range, but the
online reports didn't excite me, and neither did the price on the
Tamron.
