Bad comparison, how about you compare it to personal jet packs, yes it can
be done but of limited use to most photogs.

For some people it's a tough call to spend $4500 4.5k on a Canon 1D when you
can buy a really nice HD video camera for that money. But for others, it's
not.

Maybe not a bad comparison. There is a good chance this will end up
on entry level DSLRs in the near future. Jet packs "never took off."

And "video on DSLRs" (much like "front wheel drive") is a "solution
to a non-existent problem".

Video on dSLRs _may_ be a solution to the problem of how to sell more dSLRs.
Even if it's not even slightly interesting to people who buy D200s and 5Ds,
if you can sell more dSLRs to parents with young kids, they'll be cheaper
for the rest of us. Maybe.

That doesn't seem to be a "problem", currently.

Well, actually, I don't know. Having a single tool to take high-quality
stills as well as motion pictures when desired doesn't seem like a bad idea
to me.

SLRs already have excellent glass, orders of magnitude better than your
typical video camera. Even today's sensors have a much higher resolution
than any standard TV norm. With prices for memory cards melting like ice in
July you will even have the room to store that video.
So all that is needed is really the continuous (or at least 50 frames per
second or so) readout of the sensor and the data transfer to the memory
card.
