Sure.

Play around with it. See what F-stops perform best at which focal
lengths. Bear in mind that any lens is better than no lens at all.
:-)

Thanks.

I'm buying online and deciding between that and a Vivitar 17-28mm for
roughly the same price. Any advice appreciated.

What is your price range?
Perhaps you can do better than either of these if you are patient.
What body are you going to mount this lens to?

FD mount for a T50. ~$US100

I've seen similar Canon models and they go for $$$$

6 of one, half dozen of another. Neither are great lenses. Back in
the 70;s SOME lenses sold under the Vivitar name were actually quite
good.. marketed as the Series One. They made some excellent electronic
flash guns (the 285 coming to mind). Somewhere in the mid to late
eighties they became a marketing company, buying camers, flashes and
lenes from jobbers and marketing them under the Vivitar name. In this
day and age, in the FD mount you are limited to used Canon's and other
manufacturers. T50 still working huh? Back when I was selling
cameras retail, I must have taken 80% of what we sold for Warranty
repair. My Canon sales rep got real tired of hearing my rants.
Unusual for any camera, but in particulary Nikon and Canon. Glad
yours is still working.

Buy the one in the best condition if not new. That will get you the
better lens.

Jim
