That's strange. I checked some posts to another NG on Google groups,
and none of them showed up starting about a couple of weeks ago. I
guess Forte uses Easynews, so it's possible that some people saw the
posts if they also go through Easynews. I got curious because none of
the people who usually reply on another group replied to anything for
at least a week.

And now Forte support seems to be dead. No replies for over a week.
Almost as bad as MS support.

news.aioe.org is limited but free and can be used as a backup. The only
Q is: Who pays their bills???

I just set up an Eternal September account, and it seems to work just
fine so far. I was paying for the Forte service, so maybe I can cancel
that now.

Have you considered *WHY* the Eternal September service is free of charge?

Not really, and I don't really care. I never heard anything bad, so
what could possibly go wrong?

Do you have ANY idea what information you provide to the server owner
when you visit his web site?

This will give you SOME idea:- http://browserreport.com/

Ask the owner, Wolfgang M. Weyand
https://www.eternal-september.org/in...ct&language=en

The last time I looked, he had just ONE 'contact' on LinkedIn. Most odd,
IMO.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/wolfgang-m-weyand-66482743

I've always believed that there really is no such thing as a free lunch!

Btw, I have used, and DO use, ES as a back-up server! ;-)

It asked for my name, and an email address. What are you getting at?

Why is Linux free? There really is a subculture in the computer world
that believes that everything should be free (not so much these days).
Maybe the guy behind ES is one of those people.

It makes me feel goodygoody to pay for atleast one good service
andthus do my part
for keeping an active network of Usenet servers alive. But that's
me... :-))

I was happy to pay, but something broke, and they won't fix it, or
even listen to me. I even sent an email asking if they were still in
business, and again, no reply.

I did not say that have to use a paid service. Some folks can't
and it's not always the money... But if you want to then get
another service provider. You can read headers, right?

I don't want to, I'm just willing to if necessary. ES still works, and
it's already the second day...

I have been with Forte News for y e a r s. I have twice had problems
like this but an email to Forte has fixed the problem within 48 hours.
The solution has both times taken the form of a new username and
password.

But when is the last time you contacted them? And I didn't describe
the problems I'm having. I can connect just fine, but when I select a
group of messages to download, all but the first one in the selection
download, but the first one will not. I have to cancel that one
message body retrieval, wait three seconds, and then retry. It then
downloads instantly. Also, when I retrieve headers for multiple
groups, it always freezes after downloading two of them, and I then
have to close Agent, and then reopen it, and everything works fine.
And finally, some of my posts do not show up on other servers (I use
Google Groups to check). They always did show up there, but none have
since April 28th. I have none of these problems with ES.

I started using newsguy and it seems to be working.

looks can be very deceiving.

newsguy is run by a bunch of incompetent buffoons and is one of the
worst possible news providers on the entire planet. i used an isp who
had the misfortune of using newsguy, up until they got ****ed over by
them and canceled their contract (at a loss). there were quite a few
extended outages, anywhere from hours to over a week, as well as
missing posts and all sorts of user complaints. the isp basically told
them to go **** themselves.

Every month they are
giving me more bandwidth. I am not sure how much I have, Last time I
looked I use about 10% of my BW.

you must be downloading a lot of binaries.

Meanwhile it is working. That you don't approve is not even a glimmer of
a consideration.

Last week actually. With a query about URL wrapping in posts. No reply
as yet. Otherwise it is years ago that I last had access problems.

That I know. My guess is a new user name and password for you. I'm

That may be your opinion.

It's an opinion shared by many. It's quite the tool.

I don't compare anything if the author can't even be bothered
to make a UI front-end.

Console apps are UI, just not GUI based. And, there's a purpose for
everything. Not all programs require a hand holding GUI to get the job
done.

There's no excuse for command-line-only.

Now, that is just your personal opinion. One which isn't shared by all.
Command line only makes more sense in some automated tasks, actually.
XXCOPY is a good example of that.

Do you realize that it was 'Mayayana' who found the hidden code on the

I did keep a copy of the source code. Here it is:-
