There are too many laptops to choose from out there on the web. What
laptops do you use and why? I am travelling to some countries and 3
months and I want to take photographs and upload them to the web. I
already have Dreamweaver and Photoshop, I just need some hardware.

I have written a few wants below;

Must be light
60Gb HD or larger
256Mb RAM or higher
Quiet (Centrino maybe)
CD Burner

Any suggestions?

Neil

Make damm sure you get built in WiFi for connecting to the internet hassle
free. It won't cost that much extra and it will be well worth it. I
connect all over town for free.

IBM, Dell and Mac rule in the professional world. I like IBM
personaly, but make sure it meets your needs.

Same choices I would make. These three have the best displays by far. Also,
I would get a DVD burner instead of a CD burner.

I bought a HP ZE4919. It has 512 meg of ram, 60GB hd, Centrino
(1.4ghz), and a DVD burner. Light, however, it is NOT, and battery life
is brief (2.5 hours). Not a big problem in my case.

The ultimate roadwarrior PCs - Sony.

As light as 1.8 lbs ( not with 60 MB though) and some with battery life of
5-7 hours.

Not cheap though.

Everything I have read about the Sony's are that they are fragile.

The ultimate small laptop is the IBM X40. Light and indesctructable. The
DVD/CD clips on the bottom, but I never carry it.

Incredible machine.

Check www.winbook.com I stopped buying Dell and tried these Winbooks. They
are great computers and I never had a problem with the 6 that I bought. (for
my company). They were running special that are lower than the marked down
price shown on the Website.

As the other fella said, get one with Wi-Fi built in. In the 3 or 4 your
you'll have the thing, it is likely there will be more cameras that use
Wi-Fi.

I dunno, maybe Winbook is making them better now, but the builtin wifi card in
my Winbook J4 that I bought 2 years ago is pathetic in terms of performance
compared to the pcmcia card I fortunately had from another laptop.

That first requirement, light weight, is the one that will cost
the most. Subtracting one pound from the weight of the
computer seems to cost hundreds of dollars. Perhaps
you just want to build up your muscles instead

I think what you've got is a good spec. Someone else
suggested built-in wireless networking - which sounds
like a good idea to me and isn't all that expensive.

You can get a plug-in wireless card, but it won't save you
much money over a built-in and it's something to plug in
and out, and possibly lose or break.

Michael, most built in WiFi cards are poor performers compared to the PC
Cards that stick out of the box. That's just the way it goes. Most of the
time, if you're sitting inside an internet cafe sipping coffee and/or
tequila, it doesn't matter. If you're out trolling, it does.
