Default Super Moon eclipse

Davoud:
There was a brief discussion of the term "stargazing" on
sci.astro.amateur. It was agreed that astronomers consider the term to
be baby-talk for "observing."

Peter Irwin:
If they say that then they are a bunch of pretentious idiots...

How did I know someone would say that? Every vocation has its argot.

I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that
you will say in your entire life.

Of course, astronomers have at least a thousand words which either
belong to the field or have a special meaning within the field.

But deprecating the use of "stargazing" for looking at and enjoying
the night sky is mere snobbery, and claiming this attitude for
astronomers in general is pretension. In fact astronomers do use
"stargazing" especially for the recreational activity of enjoying the
night sky.

Peter.
