Those little plastic windows appearing on lenses

They are being used on Zeiss, Tamron, others. Little clear plastic windows that show the focusing distances underneath. Unfortunately, this is meaningless, unless you use your cameras as crude range-finders. What would be better would be with hyperfocal distance indicators, which these lenses don't have, and they also don't have f.stop indicators anywhere either. This minimalist look might be aimed at people more interested in look than function. http://tamron-usa.com/F012_F013speci...tm_term=BANNER There's a generation (or even a second one by now) so accustomed to zoom lenses as standard that they wouldn't know what to do with a depth of field scale or hyperfocal distance marker if they noticed it at all. But leaving such information off a prime lens does seem to be rather penny-pinching and makes the lenses less convenient for users who actually know what they're doing. Perhaps if potential buyers leave the shop without buying, after explaining why, the makers will restore the scales. Presumably the aperture indicator is part of the viewfinder or rear screen display on the cameras these lenses are built for. It should be possible to include depth of field scales there too, of course - which is down to the camera body maker rather than the lens maker. In-camera scales might even work with zoom lenses ... -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~ |
