Fixing too much flash
Wes Gray wrote:
I have this photo which I am pretty happy with: http://picasaweb.google.com/wesleygr...93629613775842 It seems like I should do something to reduce the glare of the flash. I played around with brightness and contrast, and was having a hard time telling if I was making things better or worse. If this was your photo, what would you do with it? Do you mean something like this? http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6883/geckops3.jpg |

What did you do to reduce the glare in the cherry without wrecking the glare in the gecko eye? I am interested in others opinions about what to do to the picture since I don't trust my own eye yet. My thoughts are that the flash is a bit harsh. Do you agree? And then what Gimp/Photoshop techniques to use to achieve the recommended fix, since I'm trying to improve my skill there also. I'm no expert and I don't claim that what I did was the best thing. What I did was this: I smudged the surrounding red color on to the flash glare with Photoshop's Smudge tool, set at 10% strength, brush size 13. Then I dimmed the overall brightness in Irfanview with Gamma Correction from 1.00 to 0.85. |

If you want to tone down the glare, the simplest way is to create a selection around the area and then FilterBlurGaussian Blur and fiddle around with the amount of blur until you like it. Make sure the selection is feathered. This affects only the area in the selection. I used Quick Mask and a large, soft, brush and made one click of the brush which means I had to SelectInverse before applying the blur. Make sure you do these steps on a Dupe Layer of the original so you can change it later if you don't like it. (Photoshop, but probably also Gimp) However, personally I'd crop the image to leave only part of maraschino cherry in the image. I cropped just to the right of the base of the stem. The detail of the gecko is your picture. The cherry adds a little color and a relative size comparison, but the whole cherry doesn't add that much. It out-weighs your real subject and throws the image out-of-balance. -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida |
