Default multiple cards or 1 biggie ?

Hi all,

Just wondering what the groups opinons are on the safety of large amounts of CF memory. I'm about to purchase 2GB of CF memory and was wondering if I should buy a 2GB card.

I'm not really sure how I feel about putting all my eggs in the one basket so to speak, do others feel that way or are you happy with the reliability of Compact Flash cards ?

I know buying two 1GB cards or four 512 cards will cost a bit more but is this the option you would take ?

Many thanks for your help......Adam

P.S. I have already decided to go for Sandisk cards and I don't need high speed writing so will buy the standard cards, not Ultra ones.

I think CF flash is a solid (reliable) technology and thus, for must users, a large (2 GB) card is a good choice,

However, I also think that a PRO might have a different opinion for obvious reasons.

I've never had a problem with my cards, so I tend to trust them. I
usually take only my 2 gig card, and never worry. If it were an extremely
important event, I might take a backup, but just one. If I had the money,
I'd just buy an 8-gig card and not look back.

I have already decided to go for Sandisk cards and I don't need high

My 2-gig is a standard SanDisk. I wouldn't mind a faster card, but the
price was right (free), so I can't complain.

There's always at least one net cop around.

1st the link you posted is about why not to put binaries in newsgroups.
Big no-no for various reasons unless the newsgroup allows them.

There's nothing wrong at all with posting a message formatted in HTML
other than some folks don't have sense enough to setup their newsreaders
so that they will show messages using HTML correctly.

There are NO security issues with using HTML in a newsgroup.

Binaries are another matter.

So before you go getting in other folks case about netiquette you pretty
much ought to learn what it is you want to talk about before talking
about it.

THAT WAS THE NICE PART...

HERE's THE NOT SO NICE PART...

Go **** your self you net cop a'hole. Mind your own damn business and
leave people alone. Don't wanna read their messages then just click thru
'em.

I mostly use a single 2GB CF card - and haven't ever had an issue. Common sense dictates that you follow some basic precautions like ensuring the camera has finished writing to the card (and is in fact switched off) before removing it (or even opening the cover) - in addition to ejecting the card safely if you're using a PC based card reader.

Additionally I always format the card in the camera rather than deleting the images or formatting it on the PC.

Generally, CF cards will incur a problem in one of two ways - it will
either be defective from Day 1, or you can corrupt the data on one if
your camera's battery power gets low. As such, I'm similarly inclined
to avoid the "all eggs", even after I've test-proofed a card to full
capacity.

Presently, I'd probably not bother to buy anything smaller than a 1GB
today, particularly if you're going to be shooting RAW. You can
calcuate the price per MB to see how much the cost penalty is ... with
some of the rebates, its not necessarily all that onerous.

Do you think that you don't need high speed cards because you won't
need them while taking pictures in the camera? IMO, the reason to buy
higher-speed cards is to reduce the throughput bottleneck when you're
downloading the entire contents of the CF card onto your PC. As such,
I've stopped buying "standard" speed, even for digital P&S cameras.

This is a mistake in my opinion. While your camera may be slow
today, the next camera you get will likely be faster. Then you
would be stuck with slow cards and have to buy new ones.
Penny wise or pound foolish? Fast cards are only 10 to 20%
higher cost, but will be useful a lot longer.

Regarding one or two cards, I would buy a minimum 2 cards for the
following reason: if one card fails, you have a backup.
I have had one card fail, out of the approximately dozen
cards I own. Second, buy the highest capacity cards
you can afford, as your next camera will likely have
more megapixels where you would benefit from larger cards.
And finally, don't go for the largest and fastest as it usually
costs more per megabyte. Prices are fairly linear in
cost per megabyte up to 4 gigabytes.

I prefer 512 cards because I can put it in my laptop and copy the whole
thing to a folder, then immediately copy that whole folder to a CD without
having to click click click so many files, burn a CD, then click click all
the other files. When I get a DVD burner I may consider much larger cards.
