If you are refering to the rear vent on the belly radiator nacelle, that would be closed when landing, as the P-51 is not going to need the additional thrust from the "Meredith Effect". Note he has the flaps down for landing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meredith_effect -- Regards, Savageduck |

What lens did you use and did you crop by much? Thank you. I used my Nikkor 70-200 on a D300. I am too lazy to see how much it was cropped, but my guess is that it was not severe. ... and why does he not have his radiator open? ? -- PeterN |

Note he has the flaps down for landing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meredith_effect My understanding is that the rear vent is the radiator control and is open at low speeds and altitude to get the maximum air flow through the radiator. See http://c8.alamy.com/comp/BF87DY/nort...sex-BF87DY.jpg or http://tinyurl.com/z9o4ehy and http://h7.alamy.com/comp/B6G3M8/p-51...ane-B6G3M8.jpg or http://tinyurl.com/hqhshew The additional cooling from the open vent is not needed at low power settings but will be needed if the approach is aborted the aircraft has to climb away. Approaching with the vent closed is OK as far as it goes but it gives the pilot one more thing to (forget?) to do in the event an emergency suddenly calling for full power. The thrust (from the radiator acting as a ramjet) can amount to about 30 pounds at high power and speeds at medium altitudes but as you say it can be ignored under approach and landing conditions. Anyway, that guy in Peter's photograph should have had the radiator open. :-) -- Regards, Eric Stevens |

I am not going to tell the pilot that he's flying it wrong. ;-) -- PeterN |
