Any reason why (almost) no DSLRs or ILCs have inbuilt GPS? Sony had a
number of models with GPS in the past, but then took this feature out. Given that cameras get more and more expensive, cost can't be the reason. Battery life isn't impacted by GPS, at least not in the Sony models. -- Alfred Molon Olympus E-series DSLRs and micro 4/3 forum at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MyOlympus/ http://myolympus.org/ photo sharing site |

Perhaps Sony turn on the GPS less often than other did in the past. Depending on how it's operated, a typical modern GPS module may take between 5 and 35 mA at 3V. https://www.u-blox.com/sites/default...-13003366).pdf -- Cheers, David Web: http://www.satsignal.eu |

Short version: there are many things about a DSLR that drive the purchase choice. GPS is very low in priority for most DSLR buyers - nice-to-have v. essential to making photos. And of course GPS uses power and of course it is added cost. -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing. |

Battery life in my Canon 6D is greatly impacted by GPS through a programming error on Canon's part. GPS remains on when the camera is powered off. One can go into the menus and turn it off but the switch is buried deeply in the menus and that is an unnecessary bother. As a result I almost never use the 6D's GPS feature. Instead, I add geographic coordinates in Lightroom. If I'm in unfamiliar terrain that I feel I might not be able to pinpoint later (rare) I take an iPhone photo at the location and use its GPS data. Canon got it right with my 5D Mark IV; GPS turns off with the rest of the camera. I use it all the time because I photograph little arthropods and other small living things for the Encyclopedia of Life and the Maryland Biodiversity Project and having GPS data--where does this critter or plant live--is important in such photos. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm |

Well, it would drive my purchase choice. It's just about the only feature that would make me think about changing my Canon 40D. And of course GPS uses power and of course it is added cost. I have got a Panasonic compact superzoom with GPS. Before a firmware update GPS drained the battery very quickly. Since the update, there's not much difference between having it switched on or off. Apparently, pre-update, the GPS was on all the time, regardless of power state. Now it's off when powered down, and polls a few times a minute. -- Cheers, Rob |

For Nikon my GP-1 has always performed well but it does add a gizmo to the hotshoe and an additional cable. they're only finally understanding wifi. ....and the various manufacturers have yet to perfect the various implementations of camera WiFi and their ad hoc etworks. They are not yet reliable enough for me to depend on 100%. -- Regards, Savageduck |

And Apple set the pace for that strategy. your feeble attempt at apple bashing failed yet again. as usual, you are completely wrong. apple was the first computer company to build wifi *into* the computer itself while pc makers forced users to use an external dongle which required installing drivers (and the incompatibilities that brings). apple was also the first to include bluetooth classic on the logic board and the first to offer btle in both smartphones and computers. windows systems still don't have btle standard and android only recently caught up (and still a bit buggy). meanwhile, nikon had this overpriced dongle: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-pro...s/wt-4a-wirele ss-transmitter.html |
