Anyone get a digital camera for Christmas?
I decided to bite the bullet and get me and the wifey the Pentax K100D! Got
the kit 18-55mm lens, plus a Promaster 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens. Sure, there's a little missing between the 55 and 70, but I don't think we'll miss it that much. And, Santa got my daughters (13 and 11) each a Canon A530! It was a digital camera Christmas! We've been away for the past couple days, so we haven't had a chance to open the cameras up and play with them, yet. That'll be tomorrow's fun! Hope your Christmases were full of digital fun, too! -- Eric Babula Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA |

I got a canon xti with kit lens 18-55 that is made for digital cameras and a 75-300 ef III that is for film or digital. the 75-300 needs to be converted by 1.6 ( 120-480) adjustment for smaller sensor, while the 18-55 needs no adjustment. This "made for digital" is really just a marketing term for a lens that has a smaller image circle and does not affect its focal length. The 1.6x adjustment is more to help people who are used to shooting film to get an idea what the lens will seem like in terms of field of view when mounted on a digital body with a 1.6x sensor. cheers adrian www.boliston.co.uk |

One lens stops at 55mm, the other starts at 70mm. The size of the sensor does not change the focal length of the lenses. Wrong. Neither needs adjustment, and neither changes focal length, ever, under any conditions (except for zooming, of course). "Made for digital" probably only means that the lens was designed for the smaller image circle useable by the smaller sensor camera. Still, the focal length does not change. Robert |

Totally untrue. Forget the equivilants and learn what it really means. The poster applies the 1.6 multiplier to one lens, but not the other. Sorry, but this doesn't make any sense. The focallength of the lenses does not change, only the angle of view does when it's mounted on a small sensor (APS-C) camera, like the K100D. |

The focallength of the lenses does not change, only the angle of view does when it's mounted on a small sensor (APS-C) camera, like the K100D. your right both need the adjustment for the equivalent focal length for film. I was told by the salesman at the store that the kit lens was designed for digital camera's and that the 1.6 factor didn't appliy to it. below is the link to canon usa web site that shows the lens needs the adjusment and is equivalent to a 28-90mm focal length. As for the gap between 55-70 is 15 but the gap between their 1.6 equivalent is 88-112 is 24. a difference of 9 or is this still wrong. 55*1.6 =88 70*1.6=112 70-55=15 112-88=24 24-15=9 Robert http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...ode lid=10512 EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM A standard zoom exclusively for the EOS Digital Rebel and EOS 20D SLR cameras with APS-C size image circle equivalent to an approx. 28-90mm focal length. Compact and ultra-lightweight with impressive close-focusing ability of 0.9 ft (0.28m). Features optimized coating for digital imaging sensor to minimize ghost images and flare. The lens can only be mounted on the Digital Rebel and EOS 20D with shorter back focus than ordinary EF lenses |
