20D vs 1D mkII
So the 20D sensor is the same but it's missing a lot of features, less focus
points, no weather-proofing. Is that basically it? |

From: "you know who maybe"
So the 20D sensor is the same Nope, the 20D sensor is smaller with a 1.6x magnifier effect. The 1D M II has a 1.3x effect. but it's missing a lot of features, less focus points, no weather-proofing. Is that basically it? 20D needs f/5.6 or wider to AF (like all the consumer grade Canons), M II will AF with lens/tele-converter combos at f/8 (ie, f/4 lens with 2x t/c or f/5.6 lens with 1.4x t/c). Actually if you stack a 1.4x and a 2x on an f/4 lens (f/11 effective) the Mark II will still AF, which is surprising. Also the motor drive has a faster frame rate and the buffer is deeper so you can shoot a longer burst. http://www.inkjetart.com/news/archiv...1-10-04.html#6 for a good run-down of the differences. |

Different sensor, the 20D is a 1.6X FOV (22.5 x 15.0 mm CMOS sensor) versus the 1D mk.II 1.3X FOV (28.7 x 19.1 mm CMOS). So pretty much a different dSLR, some do call it the mk. II lite... |

: So the 20D sensor is the same but it's missing a lot of features, less focus points, no weather-proofing. Is that basically it? Though both 8MPix the 1DMkII has a physically larger sensor which gives a greater light gathering capability. The Canon 1DMkII has many advantages over the 20D, check dpreview.com, here are some important ones (IMO): Water/dust seals 45 pt AF AF at f8 Faster more accurate AF 8.5 fps (vs 5fps) 20 frames buffer RAW (vs 6) 40 frames buffer JPEG (vs 23) More robust design, shutter good for over 200000 activations Both CF and SD cards, can write both simultaneously Spot/multispot metering ISO 50 option Integrated vertical grip (vs optional vertical grip) Canon also claim a greater dynamic range on the 1DMkII. This could be related to the larger pixels on the big sensor, the 20D has smaller pixels than the 300D, 10D and 1DsMkII, whereas the 1DMkII has bigger pixels than any of the other cameras in the current EOS range (except the older 1Ds if it is not yet discontinued). -- Mark Heyes (New Zealand) See my pics at www.gigatech.co.nz (last updated 12-Nov-04) "There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't" |
