Default Save with PS darkens image

I posted the other day about cropping with Photoshop 5.0 darkening images.
I have come to realize that it is actually just saving a file with Photoshop
that is causing the image to darken. I can open a Canon RAW image using
Canon ZoomBrowser EX software and convert and save it as a tif or jpg. I
can then reopen the tif or jpg file with Canon, Irfanview, or Kodak software
and resave the file with another name. When I compare the original to the
saved copies they look exactly the same. If I open the original tif or jpg
with Photoshop 5.0 and either Save a Copy or Save as another name, the image
is much darker than the original. Much darker.

This is a real propblem, since I cannot use Photoshop to edit my images
without making them much darker, since I will have to save any edits or
alterations. Images saved with Photoshop appear darker both on my monitor
and on prints as well.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know the remedy?

Thanks for any assistance.

I went to FileColor SettingsProfile SetupRGB. I changed the RGB setting
from Monitor RGB to None. Everything looks perfect now. I just need to
have prints made. If they are the same, I got it!! Thanks for your help.

I suspect it is to do with your colour settings - what settings
are you using? Do you get a profile mismatch dialog when you
open the images? What working space are the images using?
I would suggest using one of the 'General Purpose Defaults'
settings, and see if the problem goes away.
