Default question on sensor size

Kind of a Newbie question on sensor size.
What is the difference between, 1/2.5 " or 1/1.6 " or 1/1.8 " on non-slr's
or 4/3" or 23.7 x 15.6 mm on a Nikon. Do more or bigger sensors necessarily
mean better pictures? and If so, why? thanks
Scott

Scott, there's an explanation he

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glos...r_sizes_01.htm

Bigger sensors require larger lenses, making the camera bulkier but, in
exchange, they can work at a higher ISO setting therefore taking better
quality photographs under darker conditions. For my small-sensor cameras,
I tend to stick with ISO 100.

4/3 is an intermediate size which should have allowed smaller, lighter
cameras with near-DSLR quality, but the jury is still out as to whether it
will be a success.

23.7 x 15.6 mm sensors for DSLRs mean that the lens angle of view is
reduced, so that for a wide angle you need a 20mm focal length instead of
a 30mm focal length. On the other hand, it means that with telephoto
lenses, a DSLR with a 200mm lens can produce the same image as a film SLR
with a 300mm lens. On the other hand, the lens can be smaller, lighter or
cheaper as it only needs to cover a smaller image circle.

Cheers,
David
