Fears for 700 jobs as Ilford faces closure
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::
:::

Chris Barry

MORE than 700 jobs in Cheshire were today at risk after photographic
products maker Ilford Imaging was put into administration.

The 740 staff at Ilford’s factory in Mobberley, near Knutsford, were
told the shock news today.

No job losses have been announced yet at the company, founded in 1879.
Three partners from the Manchester office of accountancy firm Grant
Thornton are conducting a review of the business, which they will try to
sell as a going concern.

Should they fail, the company will be put into receivership and finally
into liquidation.

The Cheshire operation makes traditional black and white photographic
supplies, while its Swiss-based business – not affected by the crisis
– makes digital inkjet products. While there is still a market for
black and white photographic paper, sales have been falling.

Ilford has tried to compensate by building up the digital business.
Administrator Les Ross said today: “This is obviously devastating
news, but we are doing all we can to ensure that some, if not all of the
business survives. I am afraid some job losses are inevitable, but it is
too early to say how many or when. I will be speaking to the staff
today.”

He said the market for black and white photographic paper had plunged by
26 per cent this year, which made the business very difficult to
sustain.

“They’ve also been hit by the weak dollar, which has worsened an
already difficult situation,” he said.

Staff leaving the site said management had told them not to speak to the
media, but several did express their views without giving their names.

One worker said: “The rumour last week was we were going to be bought
by a German firm. We’ve been told nothing definite yet, it’s a case
of wait and see.”

Yep. Saw that just this afternoon. Don't worry. Film will be around for a
long time, even if you do have to get it from Croatia.

That is realy bad news :-( I hope we'll find some other brand for a long
tilme if this one fails. I guess Foma papers should be worth trying.
Does anyone have tried it?

Yes, though for me it was TriX and D76. I have since progressed to SFX
and Ilfotec DD-X, both of which I would hate to see disappear.

Ciao!
