Default Almost Arrested In NYC

I guess it makes sense with all the added post 9/11 security measures,
but I have been questioned numerous times taking photos of manhole
covers in the city. I've traveled the world taking pictures - not
always of manhole covers of course - and never been hassled, but it's
happened on more than one occasion here. I suppose photagraphing
anything that's affiliated with the 'workings' of the city could be
presumed as suspicious activity. This hasn't dampened my enthusiasm,
I just thought it was interesting to share.

Some city appliances are very old and interesting.....Not only manhole
covers, but also fire plumbing......There are brass fire fittings that date
back into the 19th century and are still in use. these would be interesting
to photograph also. When I was in Europe about 20 years ago, I noticed that
some of the door knockers and hinges were very old and quite
beautiful.....One could make photographing these a great hobby also.....

I've seen a real neat coffee-table book that was nothing but photos of
manhole covers. Pretty cool.

I found the old hand operated iron water pumps dotted around Berlin to
be fascinating.

There's enough of those in Paris to keep you busy for many years.

I bet London is full of them also.....All you'd need is a lens (set) that's
the right length to fill the frame from a tripod set up on the street in
front of the average house....

The colonial areas of Mexico have some wonderful doors. In fact there
are several photo books on this subject, most notably _The Doors of
San Miguel_.

Mexico, in general, is full of great artwork.....the people are too poor to
do much of anything else, and their art is bold and strong, and full of
brilliant colors.....It reminds me of Van Gogh.

Speaking as one who's been stopped by everyone but cops, I don't think it
has anything to do with 911 any more. It's just a golden opportunity for
every unemployable who can find a pencil. And it never occurs to the idiots
that a terrorist would ever tell a lie. OTOH, if I had a choice between
talking to photographers on the street or checking sneakers at the airport,
the choice would be obvious. Great website. Bob Hickey

Yeah.....Don't forget, cops get bored too.....Sometimes it's OK to humor
them a little.......

Hi John,

Nice website.

I've been stopped before by security guards who said they were gonna
report me to the FBI for suspected terrorism. The FBI hasn't shown up at
my door yet and that was a few years ago.

Consider printing one of these and stuffing it in your camera bag:
