Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens

This American Masters program looks worth watching. It's on Wednesday, January 3rd on PBS. ----- "Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens" profiles the photographer, who discusses her artistic process. Included: at work at her studio; at home on her farm; compiling a retrospective book. Thanks for that! DVR is set to record it. Should be interesting and inspiring. More info: http://bonus.ppmag.com/2006/12/american_master.html (Producer appears to be Leibovitz' sister, Barbara). There's additional footage online at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmast...a_footage.html I hope a lot of us see it and can discuss it. PBS is one television product the US can be extemely proud of! Other lighting sources - CRI
When looking at alternative ligthing, the notion of the Color Rendering Index (CRI) also comes into play. It is a measure of how well the light source outputs all the colors of objects that are lit by that source. The CRI of an incandescent bulb is nearly 100. Not because it is so "good" but because it emits light in all the wavelenghts that we perceive (although not like "daylight" so it doesn't score a perfect 100). Becasue fluorescent lights are "spikey", they end up with a low CRI of 65 (or so) for cool white and up to 80 - 90 for tri-phosphor fluorescent. [note the objection to use of the CRI wrt to fluorescents in the article linked below]. The fact that a light is "warm" or "cool" is not considered in the index. On the left: incandescent. On the right: fluorescent: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/09/SPD.png The more technical minded can peruse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index In summary, consider: -light color temperature -Color Rendering Index when looking at artificial light sources for photography. I watch this and found it to be interesting from the conceptual angle - which is irrelevant between film v. silicon photo gear. I think her cover work with Rolling Stone put that magazine on the global map. It's interesting that Annie Leibovitz seems to share certain personality traits with Richard Avedon, from what I've seen on American Masters. It obviously takes as outgoing, directive individual to make a successful celebrity photographer. If you watch films on Ansel Adams, you'll see a personality at the other end of the spectrum, introverted. Adams was just the sort you'd expect to find working alone in wilderness. SW |

-- jer Yeah, lots of lessons there. Through the years, technique and equipment changed but ultimately it was the subject, lighting, and creative posing that made her thumbprint unique. Mostly I am impressed by how she would really challenge her subjects to offer something different than the usual portrait fare. I was a little surprised to hear her say that she found cover images to be more confining than her more experimental techniques in the back pages of magazines. It was interesting to see that not everything was going well on that photo shoot with the carriage. Equipment meltdowns and practical problems were getting in the way of making things happen. It seems that the creative notions have to be put together before a shoot to allow smooth workflow, since there are a lot of distractions that would muddy creative waters otherwise. In a way, all her helpers and equipment are a distracting hindrance to creativity. I also liked her candid reflection on the personal mistakes she made through the years. Annie is an American icon, for sure. Dave |
