Help Regarding Print Dryer and Asbestos
Could I pick your collective brains.
I am disposing of an old Nova Fibre Based Print Dryer but have been told that the older models may contain asbestos. I was wondering if anyone had any idea if the unit does contain asbestos. I purchased this machine in around 1993 - 1995. I have contacted the manufacturers but no response as yet. The address to view the unit is: http://www.novadarkroom.com/cgi/sh00...2117#aAPGS2117 Any helpful comments gratefully received TIA |

I'd be surprised if a product supplied new in 1993, and with a short supply chain, would contain asbestos. (One way to determine whether, is by a microscopic fibre analysis checking out the refractive index. I've got the microscopes etc. but not the reference refractive indexed liquids or specialist knowledge.) You've got me worried now. In my darkroom I have an old Kodak dryer, and it's so old it predates the web by a decade or three. It gets far too hot and melts every print I've tried to dry on it. -- M Stewart Milton Keynes, UK http://www.megalith.freeserve.co.uk/oddimage.htm |

The danger of it comes from the dust which can be breathed in. When its being removed from buildings there are some precautions that must be taken to prevent clouds of dust from spreading and being breathed. But handling the belts of a dryer, or in my short television studio work, the 2,000 watt spot light cables were asbestos cloth covered, is a minimal risk. actually, people working in greenhouses, especially those potting up seedlings and mixing custom blend potting soils have far more exposure danger, those bags of vermiculite are the same lung infecting agent. |

Also asbestos is not nerve gas, anthrax, nor even ecolli bacteria. I agree entirely with both these points. Asbestos is a major problem only when disturbed and the age of the machine puts it well beyond the point at which asbestos was banned from being used in manufacture. Apparently Malcolm this unit has been in manufacture for around 50 years. When it started that run asbestos could have been an issue. But not in 1993. Many thanks Malcolm and zeitgeist for taking the trouble to reply. Best regards |
