Me a guru? Not. I presume you mean a PCMIA adapter to download off a camera
to the PC, but regardless, I can't answer because the slowest part of the
chain is probably the camera itself. If it can't feed any faster than the
adapter, speed is a moot point.

Exacty what are you doing, Greg? Which camera, what PC and is it going to an
external drive. (FWIW, I don't ever worry about those issues. I use only
USB-2 and Firewire, and get a new computer every two years as part of the
day job. )

Downloading via a PCMIA adapter (camera not attached) to a G4 Laptop
512mb ram/ 512mb & 1GB cards. B&H has a Firewire card reader that hooks
right to the Fire wire port....just wonder if the images will download
faster either to the HD of the laptop or to a CDrom by using Firewire.

Go with Firewire. BTW - When you downoad to a CDROM, it's actually
downloading to work space on your hard drive. You just can't see it. After
you Burn the CDROM, the files are deleted from the hard drive.

Downloading a CF via Firewire ? That's kinda like using a
firehose to pump fuel into a lawnmower engine !

Note that USB 2.0 is by far the prevalent interface for
peripherals.

512mb Ram on computer.
