Hands-on preview is on DPReview. Numerous improvements over the D80 it
replaces. 12.2 megapixels, self cleaning sensor, faster frame rate, movie
mode, Live View, better autofocus, scene recognition, etc. In fact, this
camera compares more closely to the D300 than it does the D90.

I can see it now, a D90 with a Lowel Omni QH lamp on top, with a Sennheiser
ME66 - K6 Shotgun Mic hanging off the side. A Petroff matte box on the lens,
and the entire rig perched on a Steady-Cam Junior... shooting a YouTube
video...

Do you still need the Steady-Cam if you have VR? :-)

VR wasn't designed for dSLR/Lens combos being held out at arm's length.

Steven Spielberg is filming the next Indiana Jones: Search For Lost Youth
with the D90...

Excellent point. I don't think VR, hand held will match the smooth
moves of S-C, but VR lenses should be an additional asset for the D90
movie shooter.

S-C is about moving the camera smoothly, not making stills sharp.

I wouldn't think VR would help much in movie mode myself.

Now, here is something to think about: a DX sensor is close to
"full-frame" in the movie industry. Now, if you had an anamorphic
lens...

It stabilises the image in the viewfinder very well - so it would
certainly help on those long zoom shots, even if it's obviously not a
steadycam substitute..

And in fact there are optical stabilisers for movie cameras ...
but they are of the flexible (filled) prisma type, instead of the
'usual' shifting lens type.

Full frame in the movie industry has little meaning in this context as
there is a plethora of formats, perforations/frame and associated
lenses. And within film stocks, various frame sizes are used.

I recall reading recently that 1970/80's movies filmed in half frame (2
sprocket holes high) to keep the film budget down, and digitized
(recently) gave fabulous results. (American Graffiti, IIRC).

Movies today are shot in 35mm (usually anamorphic but some spherical)
and 65mm (spherical and some anamorphic).

It's an engineers wet dream as the industry seems to love changing and
playing...

With all the bazillions of people involved on the set, lighting, sound,
marketing, etc, etc, is the cost of film itself really a significant
contribution to the total cost of producing a movie?

In simpler times and low budget efforts and constrained budgets
(American Graffiti was expected to fail, but to help develop Lucas) it
certainly is.

Low budget movie making will go entirely digital to eliminate film and
especially all of the handling that goes with it.
