Ok, time to have some fun in this group. We've all seen the threads
about the supposed pending announcement of the Canon 5D. For purely
entertainment value, lets keep a running total of who thinks its real,
and who doesn't.

For terms of scoring, "yes its real" will be evaluated on the following
criteria:
1. An announcement by Canon of a 5D before the end of August.
2. The 5D is full frame.
3. The 5D has ~ 12mp resolution, +/- 2 megapixels.

Post a reply to this message, with a "Yes i think its real" or "No i
thinks its bogus" before Friday, August 20th, 11:59pm EST.

For starters, I'll say "No i think its bogus".

PS I'm being generous with the +/- 2 mps.

I'm guessing it's real, at 12.8mp and full frame, or nearly so. Check the
published specs, the sensor is about 0.1mm smaller than the one in the 1Ds
mkII.
If the 28-105 f4 L IS is true, there's two 28-135 IS lenses that are going
to hit ebay in a hell of a hurry!

Although I appreciate the moral support, looks like in the last 48
hours its all but official... lots of sites posting specs now in
anticipation of the release.

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/265500

The supposed $3500 USD is only about 2.5x that of the 20D... I'd be
more comfortable if it ends up being ~$5k -- given its supposed market
position I think it calls into question Canon's commitment to the 1.6
EF-S mount. A $3500 model today is the $1750 model of 2008...or less.

At the moment, it doesn't call ANYTHING into question, unless Canon is
actively leaking some of these specs, which is an exceptionally poor
marketing technique.

It is all speculative, and until it is officially announced, it's
useless to say it "does" anything.

What is the EOS 1D Mark II N, on that same site? A higher resolution 1D
Mark II in response to the Nikon D2x?

Welcome to high tech marketing...where "leakage" keeps people from buying
your competitor's product while you design, debug, tool, and manufacture
yours.
Of course, Canon has a history of being pretty quick...they might even be at
the
"tool" step by now.

If anything, Canon risks keeping people from buying their own existing
products, more than they risk keeping people from buying something from
someone else. An official announcement might have some Osborne effect on
the 20D, but not a hell of a lot given the $2300 price difference.

It appears that the EOS 1D Mark II N will be Canon's response to the
Nikon D2x, while no competitor has anything similar to the alleged EOS-5D.

$1700 is a fair guess for 2008 or 2009 for FF but I think they will
still be making 1.6 EF-S cameras for the under $1000 market in 2008.
