Gaffer tape's primary use is on stage or movie sets to provide marks where the actor is to stand or items are to be placed. Using duck tape would result in sticky residue that requires clean-up. Using regular masking tape would result in it being scuffed off quickly. A primary use is also to cover wires laid across the floor to prevent people from tripping over the wires. The wires may be frequently moved, so easy removal and lack of adhesive residue is important. A "gaffer" is, of course, a show business term for an electrician.
