Nikon Teleconverters and the D40

I have read that other users experienced sporatic problems with the teleconverters on other cameras but I have not found anything definative saying they will not work .. Nikon AF-S teleconverters will autofocus with AF-S lenses on the D40. Not all teleconverters are AF-S, however. Nikon AF-S teleconverters only work on a very few Nikon lenses. They have to be AF-S and the rear lens element must be recessed enough to allow mounting of the teleconverter. And I believe Nikon no longer makes non-AF-S teleconverters. So a Nikon AF-S teleconverter will work well with the 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR lens. It will not work with the 80-400mm AF VR lens. Some other teleconverters *may* autofocus with that lens if they will mount at all, but not on the D40. When Nikon says a teleconverter is compatible with certain lenses, they mean it. The teleconverter literally will not fit on other lenses in their current lineup. It might fit on older lenses, or it might not. As pointed out, there are some errors in the Nikonians list and, in any event, the list tells you nothing about the quality of image you will get. You might get some third party teleconverters to work with some Nikon lenses that will not otherwise accept teleconverters. You might even get them to use features like AF-S and VR. But the image may well be unacceptably fuzzy. Just because the chart says you can get it to work does not mean you will like the results. -- Paul Furman www.edgehill.net www.baynatives.com all google groups messages filtered due to spam |

But there are still a lot of the older ones out there. They won't work on the D40, so I made sure to specify the AF-S teleconverters. -- Waddling Eagle World Famous Flight Instructor |
