It's message boards like this that are killing the effectiveness of usenet.
What's wrong with creating a model group on usenet?
It doesn't cost a bean, people can use whatever newsreader they want, and
you don't have to give up your personal details to a shady organistaion that
will sell your email to any fraud peddling Viagra, miracle health pills or
penis enlargement devices.

Stuff your spam, Allan!

The model group in alt net was probably one of the most contentious places,
especially with a long running flame/troll war between two jerks that were
famous here.

I understand what you are saying. I sometimes think that the z-prophoto
list has done much to drain folks off rec.photo. However it was necessary
to provide a safe and peaceful harbor for normal folks to converse without
becoming sucked into the troll vortex.

Photographers were one of the earliest adopters of the internet (at least of
any non-engineer-science interest) You would see some 'names' posting.
However, even in the early days when sysops didn't worry about first
amendment rights and would boot off someone flaming, there was a high
signal/noise ratio, Nikon/canon wars as loud and repetitive as PC/mac.
