[SI] Mandate query...
OK, some of you don't like the "open" mandate. Fair enough. How about
we substitute "Journalism" for open? You'll need to submit a newsworthy shot. Any other suggestions? |

I don't have a problem with "open". In fact, I'd prefer it. I'm losing interest in the Shoot In, but not because of the mandates. I'm losing interest because of the lack of comments when the submissions are posted. -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida |

Any other suggestions? 1. Night shots 2. Fill flash used in daylight 3. Flash 4. Panorama or HDR or both 5. Pick a color, say "RED" 6. Sunrise (sunsets are too easy) 7. Motion blur 8. Long exposure Thanks! I'll use one of these. |

It was also one of my luckiest, which is why I proposed that idea a couple of weeks ago. : 2. Fill flash used in daylight Waaaay too commonplace. We're all good enough photographers to know when daytime fill flsh is required and to use it when it is. : 3. Flash Yawn!! See above. No. let me go further: Modern high-sensitivity sensors and manufacturers' aversion to overexposure have marginalized flash to a minor cosmetic tool. Any picture readily identifiable as a flash picture is probably a newbie error. (Unless, of course, it was taken by Harold Edgerton and James Killian.) : 4. Panorama or HDR or both Fine, but pair it with a parallel mandate for those of us lacking interest in those techniques or the time to learn how to use them adequately. : 5. Pick a color, say "RED" OK, but (artistically) colorizing a picture to meet such a mandate isn't particularly hard. : 6. Sunrise (sunsets are too easy) I'll call that one too. (Although I missed one of the best sunrises I ever saw a month or two ago because I was driving to catch my train to work. And I think I had only my cell phone cameras with me anyway.) :^| : 7. Motion blur I'll pass. I don't much like motion blur. That said, I think Bowser used it very effectively in his drag racing picture the other day. : 8. Long exposure Most long exposures are boring. Me too. : I'm losing interest in the Shoot In, but not because of the mandates. : I'm losing interest because of the lack of comments when the submissions : are posted. I used to comment fairly regularly, but haven't much recently. It's mostly because I've been unusually busy at work, but some of that has been due to increasing involvement in work-related photography. Obviously I'm not going to duck those opportunities, so I hope you'll cut me some slack for now. Sooner or later others will step up to the plate anyway. The more pictures people submit, the more good feedback we'll get. Bob |

One of the best pictures I ever took was a night shot. It was also one of my luckiest, which is why I proposed that idea a couple of weeks ago. Similar here. : 2. Fill flash used in daylight Waaaay too commonplace. We're all good enough photographers to know when daytime fill flsh is required and to use it when it is. I'm not :-( I'd be most interested to see examples. : 3. Flash Yawn!! See above. No. let me go further: Modern high-sensitivity sensors and manufacturers' aversion to overexposure have marginalized flash to a minor cosmetic tool. Any picture readily identifiable as a flash picture is probably a newbie error. (Unless, of course, it was taken by Harold Edgerton and James Killian.) Again, I'd find it useful. : 4. Panorama or HDR or both Fine, but pair it with a parallel mandate for those of us lacking interest in those techniques or the time to learn how to use them adequately. Not my thing either, but I'd be more than happy to see the contributions. : 5. Pick a color, say "RED" OK, but (artistically) colorizing a picture to meet such a mandate isn't particularly hard. Agreed. Please don't pick "CYAN" or "MAGENTA". : 6. Sunrise (sunsets are too easy) I'll call that one too. (Although I missed one of the best sunrises I ever saw a month or two ago because I was driving to catch my train to work. And I think I had only my cell phone cameras with me anyway.) :^| : 7. I rarely like it, but Bowser's picture was great. : 8. Long exposure Most long exposures are boring. I'd like to see them. -- Pete |
