Mobile storage question
I'm interested in buying a storage device to carry on a 4 week motorcycle
tour of Europe (I'm in the UK). It needs to hold in excess of 40Gb or I'll simply buy a couple more 8Gb cards. Could someone please point me at the names of products so I can Google them and do some research. John |

John I use the HyperDrive ColorSpace UDMA 250GB It has slots for different cards, CF, SD, etc. Does quick incremental saves, battery life is very good. User replacable battery and easy to upgrade the HD. I recharge via USB when connected to my laptop They also have an accessory AA battery pack, with my usage, I have not needed one of those, but it might be useful away from a power source for more than a week. http://www.hyperdrive.com/HyperDrive.../hdcsu-250.htm They have some other options; http://www.hypershop.com/category-s/119.htm I think these are the best value in this type of storage short of a pocket USB or Firewire HD and a laptop. -- Regards, Savageduck |

In terms of portability, buy more cards. True, but this is not necessarily about saving on buying more cards. I can say making regular saves to my HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA and Laptop saved me from losing two weeks of shots on a trip to Africa when my D300, a 16GB & 2 x 8GB CF cards (and some other stuff) were stolen. As a result I only lost 10 shots taken after my regular save that morning. So if it is a case of not wanting to carry a laptop, a device such as the HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA, or even an iPod, can be easily packed, and is insurance over and above any number of cards you might have with you. -- Regards, Savageduck |

John I've been using a Jobo "Giga One" for some years. It's pretty basic; simply copies the files to a hard disc and you have to take it on trust that it's worked. The first time I did it on the road, without a laptop, I took a deep breath before deleting the images from the card. But it has always done what it claims to. Looks like they don't make that model anymore but they have others available now. e.g. http://www.jobo.com/web/GIGA-one-SONIC.449.0.html |

From experience I would avoid anything from Jobo. I lost about a third of the shots from a job thanks to mechanical failure of a Jobo Giga One hard drive (the other shots were still on CF cards) and had to re-shoot part of the job. In all fairness this isn't something that's unique to Jobo, given that they didn't manufacture the hard drive that failed. If it's important, back it up. Twice. This is as true in the field as it is anywhere else. - Solomon [who has had every make of hard drive fail at one point or another] -- Solomon Peachy pizza at shaftnet dot org Melbourne, FL ^^ (mail/jabber/gtalk) ^^ Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur. |

Looks like they don't make that model anymore but they have others available now. e.g. http://www.jobo.com/web/GIGA-one-SONIC.449.0.html When traveling I always tried to have enough, and extra CF cards. I use my Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA as part of a redundant backup protocol, not as a way to free up CF memory space. CF and SD cards are relatively inexpensive today. and I would only choose to clear a card if I was in dire need, and only once I had two parts of my redundant backup established. That would be CF - UDMA - Laptop (+ outboard HD). That said, in a pinch, I trust the Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA enough to clear a memory card after saving the contents, if that was the only way I could continue shooting in a compelling situation. http://www.hypershop.com/category-s/119.htm Remember, always have enough CF/SD cards on hand for your expected daily shoot. The mobile storage should only be part of a redundant backup system. -- Regards, Savageduck |
