In addition to the other lenses mentioned, the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro also
does a very good job.

Now if you REALLY want Macro for insects, (think a fly's eye), you may
want to check out the Canon Model MP E65 (1-5X lifesize) Macro.
It ain't cheap, but it is sooo good.

Alan

see if you can get the book by Peter Hicks called Photographing Butterflies
and other insects (he is a British author and his work is awesome). This is
a great book that covers the basics and also shows how to use macro lenses,
diopters and extension tubes together etc. A great read indeed. He shoots
with Nikon but the principles are the same.

If your budget is small you could also look at the Sigma 70-300mm DG APO
Macro, zooms while in macro mode from 200-300mm and is also a pretty good
tele zoom.

Default Close-up lens help

In this case, an achromatic, close-up diopter lens on a reasonable zoom
objective is the way to go. - First attempts are first attempts. Then start
spending money if you really enjoy doing this. But remember, insufficient
illumination and vibrations will soon become some of your common enemies in
this business. Assuming, of course, you convinced your specimen to stay put
and you bought good glass.
