Eyepiece on a Leica M3

I need to know if the little black eyepiece on an M3 is removeable? I have
tried to twist mine off, but I don't want to exert too much force, just in
case it isn't.

I need to clean inside it as there is a bit of fungus that is clouding up
the view. Best left to a repairman?

I was told by the local factory authorised Leica repair people that
viewfinder/rangefinder repair was a "back to Germany" job and was quoted
a price towards the value of a "user" M3. Given that mine also needed
new shutter curtains as well as a general CLA, it has become a
paperweight.

I *like* my paperweight. Actual quote was AUD1600 for the body. Also,
the DR Summicron needs a clean, another AUD200, the 35mm has bad cement
between two elements - totally cactus and the old Elmar 90mm is a bit
cloudy. My 90yr old Dad had all this stuff and he still has his 3F with
collapsible Summicron in working order (just keep the cap on between
shots because of the pinholes in the shutter). I hate to admit it, but I
will buy a 20D or maybe just a 350D before I fix any of this stuff.

eyepiece put on mine to keep my glasses from being scratched. I was
not able to remove it.

There are several good independent Leica repair people listed in the
LHSA web site. www.lhsa.org. I've used DAG and Sherry Krauter. Both do
very good work and I would highly recommend either. Sherry worked on
my M3 after Leitz had botched the repairs twice.

I hope you get things worked out OK. My M3 was such a gem that I
didn't mind a CLA expense every decade or so :-).

I think I will take it down to the local guy and see what he can do. I'm
very wary of what he will charge though.

Is there any means of unfreezing the little eyepiece (short of resorting
to a pair of pliers)?
