Default What is the future of 35mm film ?

How long will it be available?
Would it be likely that film choices
will be limited in the near future?

Nobody knows. It depends on what you and other people do.
Don't ask such stupid questions.

This question gets asked often, you can look at previous discussions
with google.

Film will be available as long as there is enough demand
to make the manufacture of films profitable. The demand for
the best selling films is several orders of magnitude greater
than this. The demand for some specialty films appears to be
around the just barely profitable point.

The specialty films will continue to disappear. Even when the
film market was growing, specialty films often got discontinued
while other specialty films got introduced.

I think it is amazing that there are still over 100 different
35mm films on the market. I'm pretty sure there won't be
100 different 35mm films available by the end of the decade.

I think the time to start worrying comes after:
a) film cameras become a specialty product only found
in a minority of camera stores
b) film is only available in camera stores.

If you can buy a film camera and film at a store which
does not specialize in cameras and film there is no need
to worry about film becoming scarce.

Peter.

We can only guess.....My guess is that 35 mm film will be around for another
50 years or more, but the choices will diminish over the years. Even today,
there have been several types that have disappeared from the market during
the last 5 or 10 years. Be versatile....Learn to use what's available, and
it won't hurt to learn to use digital equipment too....Why not take
advantage of the best of both worlds?

The same as that of good wine: A more limited market for people with
discerning tastes...
(Yes, people drink more Coca-Cola than wine)
