Jaw-dropping amateur shots of Jupiter
Check out the movie down the page. If an amateur had produced pictures
like this 30 years ago, the community would have had a collective heart attack. http://www.damianpeach.com/barbados10.htm |

Damian is one of, if not /the/, top planetary imagers in the world. The technology for us amatuer astro-imagers has come such a long way. Good times. One of the members of the IceInSpace astronomy forum recently posted this where he has posted his images side by side with Hubble images. Naturally the Hubble images are crisper, but it's an interesting comparison nonetheless. Some are pretty close in quality. Not bad considering it's amatuer gear taken at ground level, having to deal with all of the atmospheric distortions etc: http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike20...le_comparisons -- Troy Piggins |

Aah, that's the thing, isn't it. Reckon his scope is around $8k, mount say $10k, camera and filters probably pushing another $7-$10k, guiding gear, dew control, other misc bits and pieces say another $5k, and the processing software probably another $1k or 2. I think that's probably underestimating it a bit too. Not a cheap hobby, but depends on how far you want to push the envelope. Lot of my gear is second-hand and mid to low end. He's using top of the line stuff and he's been doing is since he was in high school in the 80's and using B&W film. -- Troy Piggins |
