I see you got some answers here...
....I guess this is a powerful argument for paying a premium for brass rings
instead of aluminum...

It really is amazing how much easier brass unscrews...

Short of that, you might be able to put the lens flat onto a rubber lid
remover on a tabletop and unscrew the lense filter on it. Maybe a small
strap wrench from the hardware store.

I've done it with a piece of foam rubber and the palm of my hand flat
against the top of the filter.

I used an elastic band with consistent success. Just wrap it around the
filter until there is no slack then untwist g-e-n-t-l-y.

I see you got some answers here...

Or at least for not getting the cheap house brand. I got a step up ring
from Adorama which I'm able to remove but it's always a struggle.
