"Woodbury, NY, January 5, 2008— It is with a great sense of loss that
Photo Industry Reporter announces that Herbert Keppler, a
photo-imaging publishing pioneer, editor, and mentor, died peacefully
last night following a brief illness in a Westchester, New York,
hospital. His family—wife, Louise; daughter, Kathy; and son, Tom—were
at his side.

“Burt,” as friends knew him, was one of the most revered, respected
and beloved members of the photographic community. One of the original
columnists for Photo Industry Reporter when it was founded 16 years
ago, his column, The Way It Is, was one of the publication’s most-read
features. Burt was a positive force who helped advance the industry he
loved, a thought-provoking guru for millions of amateur photographers,
and a practical camera design and marketing genius whose advice was
sought after and implemented by manufacturers, distributors and
retailers.

Over the span of his 57-year career, Herbert Keppler was probably best
known to photo enthusiasts for his 37 years at Modern Photography
magazine, rising through the ranks to the positions of editorial
director and publisher, as well as his 20-year tenure with Popular
Photography, where he was vice president and publishing director, and
where he amassed fans worldwide, both among readers and industry
colleagues."
