Building a View camera to use Hassy or Kiev backs
"Q.G. de Bakker" wrote in message
i.nl... Surprisingly, Bob Monaghan hasn't chimed in with his very good "use a non-automatic back" tip. They have a peephole allowing you to inspect transport, which is done using the key on the back itself. Works. Been suggested and the original poster said he wasn't interested - he said something about already having a Hasselblad. He's way off track, IMHO, but let him be. I suggested the *Mamiya back that can be 6x7 or 6x9 (and even 6x6 with a mask) but he wants strictly 6X6, 'blad. Too bad. * I mean the early back that is quite flat with the long, thin film area - like the ones used on the Brooks Veriwide. There were a few on ebay last month. |

The Mamiya Press back, i.e. the Mamiya Roll Film Holder Model 3? Good suggestion, that is: good back, though the curve in it makes it rather awkward to fit on view camera style cameras. Old Linhof rollfilm backs and Mamiya RB backs are very good. And there are plenty more. Cheap Horseman roll film backs, for instance. |

It does have that quirk, but if you keep the part that fastens to the view-camera back and clips to the rollfilm back, you can pop off the rollfilm back and use their ground glass finder. Providing the light trap on the back is good. (We really need a picture to show that to those unfamiliar with the setup.) |

Stacey wrote: I just told you, it's mainly the gearing. I don't think the light trap raised part of the back is the same either. It indeed isn't. Tasing a file to the Kiev back will help solve that though. ;-) But they still won't work right without other mods. Looking at the two backs I can see the gearing is recessed deeper on one than the other etc. I sure wouldn't just throw a kiev on a 'blad to see what happens! I can pretty much guess what would... :-) -- Stacey |
