I rather think you're missing the point there.


What I think Goethe was saying was that "belief" actively interferes
with understanding. "Belief" is very different from "the evidence
seems to me to indicate thus-and-such".


It becomes clearer once you quote the original.
"Der Glaube ist nicht der Anfang, sondern das Ende allen Wissens."

"Der Glaube" is religion. Faith. Belief, if you wish.
Christianity as one specia case of religion.
