Oly E-520; lens 14-42mm stop auto-focusing after a while
Alfred Molon wrote:
Ray Fischer What?!? The leading cause of failure in P&S cameras is when the lens fails to expend or retract. Meanwhile there are SLR lenses that are 50 years old that still work as well as they day they were new. Hmmm... never had a P&S lens fail. I have. More than one. Cheap lenses may be fragile, but to claim that SLR lenses are fragile is just stupid. That was an expensive DSLR lens, more expensive than the body. And the lens was less than a year old. Then get it repeared. Great new world, DLSRs are so "superior" but their lenses... One lens is supposed to represent all SLR lenses? Do I need to explain to you what's wrong with that? -- Ray Fischer |

It sounds like you should start buying decent quality lenses such as those from Nikon or Canon, or start treating your lenses properly! G If you are seeing failures, it may be that you are using consumer equipment in a professional environment, that you have a known bad lens (someone will mention brands where this is likely to be seen), or simply that you were unlucky that time. The longevity of many DSLR lenses is well known. Cheers, David |

G Since when do Nikon and Canon make decent quality lenses? Alfred runs and hides If you are seeing failures, it may be that you are using consumer equipment in a professional environment, that you have a known bad lens (someone will mention brands where this is likely to be seen), or simply that you were unlucky that time. The longevity of many DSLR lenses is well known. My expensive lens failed after less than a year of use. I'm not a pro and didn't use it so often. I probably use my camera less than 60-80 days a year. When travelling I use the camera and occasionally on weekends. -- Alfred Molon ------------------------------ Olympus 50X0, 8080, E3X0, E4X0, E5X0 and E3 forum at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MyOlympus/ http://myolympus.org/ photo sharing site |

I'm not a pro and didn't use it so often. I probably use my camera less than 60-80 days a year. When travelling I use the camera and occasionally on weekends. Just bad luck, then. We don't pay the high prices for 100% pre-tested, pre-burnt-in items, so one bad sample will occasionally get out. Your warranty covered it. I would expect that the major brands have a simple odd bad one, whether it be lenses or cameras. Whether there is good statistical evidence to suggest one major brand is better than another I don't know. Photo dealers might have a better idea. Cheers, David |

It's always good to have a second lens available in case the main one breaks. DSLR lenses unfortunately are fragile. Please speak for Olympus only! |

In article , Sigh says... Mind if I quote you for the "P&S Is Far Superior And Durable, FAQ"? It'll only add 1 more to the some 189 other reasons. People probably won't even notice this one with so many other points in P&S favor. I've never experienced problems with lenses of P&S, but this expensive DSLR lens all of a sudden stopped autofocusing. Oh I have. Not retracting properly is usually the first sign of problems. My brother has even had problems with dust inside the lens of one of his P&S's. So *that* problem is not limited to DSLR's. The point is, everything breaks eventually. -- Len |

Ah, so now it's the indestructible P&S you can drop 12 storeys down onto concrete and run a truck over 10 times versus the fragile SLR lenses which break if you look at them wrongly. Me thinks you have a hidden agenda. -Wolfgang |
