Default Your choice of editing software?

I'm looking at buying PhotoShop CS2 (nice, but Au$1000) or PaintShop Pro
(significantly cheaper - around Au$300). What are you guys using (any
others?) and which would you recommend?

TIA

Depends on your experience level, and what you expect from the program- If
all you are doing is resizing, adjusting brightness and contrast, and
building photoalbums then there are progs that are a lot cheaper than even
Painshop Pro, like Free.
Its like buying a car- If all you are doing is driving to church on sunday,
why buy a Ferrari unless that's what takes your fancy.

Totally depends on what you want it to do...

Photoshop has a long, steep learning curve and is expensive, but will 'do
the lot' when you have learned how to drive it well. For pro photo and print
work it is the first choice...

Paintshop Pro does 90% of PS, is easier to learn and cheaper - for web work
it is quicker and easier than PS - (I use PSPro about 75% of the time and PS
25%). YMMV

For 'cheap 'n' cheerful' there are many packages - some free like IrfanView
and Jpegger.
PS Elements might be worth a look... ?

PS also requires a decent spec PC (lotsa RAM, CPU and fast disks for heavy
usage) - PSPro less fussy (particularly the earlier versions 7 + 8).

I use Nikon Capture, PS CS2, PSPro, Visere viewer, lots of plugins...

If PS CS2 is out of budget, I would get PhotoShop Elements 4 instead. It is
limited, of course, but it acts a lot like PS. The browser takes some
getting used to, but if you are a hobbyist, it has a lot of things that
you'll probably end up liking. As always, make sure your computer has a lot
of free memory.

I have owned PhotoShop, Painter, PaintShopPro, PhotoShop Elements, and
others. For $300-$500 budget, get PhotoShop CS2. For $100 or less budget,
get PhotoShop Elements 4.

Don't forget Picasa, it's at the right price (0$)

Don't forget Gimp2 either, for the same price as Picasa.

Nick.

What do you use Nikon Capture for, if you also use other packages? Do
you shoot NEF?

I use Photoshop CS2, but about 90% of what I do could be accomplished
just as easily, or even more easily, with Photoshop Elements. It is
that other 10% that gets you.
