Default RAW - File Size Changes when Saved as .psd

AlanW wrote:

I notice that when I save the .nef file in the .psd format, the size
triples (i.e., the original .nef = 5200kb; the .psd = 17,000 kb).

Is this normal and can anyone explain why this happens?

After conversion, the file has three color channels instead of one.

The PSD will get even larger if you use layers, and then Photoshop may
even add a preview to the file, making it larger still. It's all normal.
