I fear that it will look like Rolei's film packaging - a paltry few
rolls in a fancy wooden box at an insane price.

In what way is that better than a shrink-wrapped
brick of 20 rolls of the "green" brand that I get from
BH photo?

'Cuz it says, "Rollei?" Oy. If this isn't the epitome
of conspicuous consumption, what is?

I said "I fear". Of course it's not better. And who needs boxes?

I was agreeing with you. Mostly reacting, as I'd
never heard of Rollei selling film. What a trip.

Maybe Mercedes and BMW should get in on it,
too. Or Blaupunkt or Braun.

If it's German it must be great.... Nicht.

And Porsche. You know Porsche - they make a legendary car every several
years, and inbetween years they rebrand other cars as Porsche for Americans.
The Porsche 914 was a Volkswagen in Germany.

So we will get Adox rejects rebranded as Porsche Portrait film with the
rationalization, "Hey you are only taking a picture of 25% of the person, so
a 75% failure film rate is a perfect metric."

And Leica will distribute IR film as Color Correct. (reference to the M8)

Okay, it's late.

The Coupeville Arts Center near where I live offers many arts workshops
each year (I have no affiliation with them whatsoever). Amongst all
their
digital photo workshops is one they're offering next August entitled
"Introduction to Film Photography". What next? Large format?
Art R.

I really don't want to get embroiled in a digital vs film debate - but
I'll
use the audio analogy again, although it isn't a very good analogy.

trendy

When
CDs came out, the record stores couldn't wait to get rid of all of their
vinyl. Much of this vinyl got relegated to discount stores, located off
the
beaten track. As for turntables, most manufacturers discontinued them
for a
while - except for Technics line of professional DJ turntables which
continued production throughout - does this sound familiar? Then about
five
or so years later some of the manufacturers started making turntables
again
and now they've got a healthy niche market. That's where film's
ultimately
going to go but it's going to take time to see where everything's going
to
settle. What's going to cause some real panic - but shouldn't scare
anyone - is when all of the minilabs start shutting down. I remember
when
there weren't any minilabs and all film had to be sent out. When this
happens - it'll be a blessing in disguise because it'll improve
processing
greatly. Just look at Dwayne's - the only Kodachrome processor in the
Western hemisphere and plenty of happy customers raving about how they
don't
scratch the film like Qualex used to. I would say sit tight and don't
panic. That's what I've been doing for the last ten years and I haven't
regretted it once.

I don't remember Linn, SME, Mitchell, Nottingham Analogue, Townshend. AR,
etc. all stopping producion at that time...

Can you get any of those at Circuit City? Best Buy?

I think you can get the DJ turntables.

For anything else, you're going to have to locate a shop that caters to
audiophiles.

That sounds like present-day vacuum tube audio...

If so, there's maybe hope for the future. My experience is good vacuum
tubes are a little more plentiful now than they were 5 or 6 years ago.

Of course my experience is pretty much limited to keeping my Fender
guitar amps up and running. Don't know what the availability of other
tubes is.

BMW made a damn good car before they became a status symbol in the US.
They were worth drivin' back in the 60s.
