In Japan? Not likely.

Well, I wouldn't presume to know where their software people are, but
logistically speaking, it could be your next door neighbour. Why can't
Japan outsource like we do?

You mean it uploads on its own? 'Cause I don't know how to get it to do

so
if it doesn't...Not much in the manual about uploading from a CF to the
camera. I know about d/l to a card from the computer.

If like other Canons, there is a firmware update item in the menu. It
may not appear unless the camera detects a CF card with new firmware.

The instructions will be with the update download (I've updated F/W in
other Canons -- S1 IS and 300D -- but not 20D). It is a very
straightforward process. Key is to start with a well-charged battery.

Phil

Thanks, I have an AC adaptor.

My guess is that the camera was made in Japan but the software developed in
India. It had to be because right after taking filling my CF card with
images, I had a need to go to Dunkin' Donuts for a Cruller.

Really what it says is that Canon is very responsive: Bug was
reported 13 days ago.

More likely it says the camera was rushed out without proper testing
in the first place, and that bug-fix was already in the works when
the camera was released.

David

There are *always* fixes to be made, new things to add.
At some point, the product has to actually be put on the market.
IMO, it's kinda unproductive to complain that Canon (or any other
company) issues fixes. I've seen companies that simply refuse to admit
that their products have faults. Believe me, a fix is better than
that.

I agree. However, I don't think that a fix that was released in 13 days
was not already in the works.... Either that, or the fix itself has had
completely insufficient testing!

David

Personally, I think it was the first.
There have been some pretty high-profile cases of products released
with almost immediate 'fixes' needed; remember Intel's processor with
the math glitch? Not pretty.
But "without proper testing"? I'm not sure on that. The cost to test
for every possible failure mode would be cost-prohibitive, IMO.
So, in a sense, the customers do act as testers.

... and not one that could be fixed with a simple patch!

Yes, they do, but there will be a range of expectation according to how
"computer savvy" the person is - more computer savvy may expect bugs to be
found and would expect patches as a matter of course, not to have drag
patches kicking and screaming from the manufacturer. Less computer savvy
may expect things to be perfect from day one. Canon has been forward in
providing the patch - credit to them on that.

The amount of time (money) devoted to testing will differ between
manufacturers, so I guess "you pays your money and takes your choice"!

Cheers,
David

Looks like they decided to spend the weekend testing this mod :-)
