Very nice. Where was this taken? Is the area sloped where you took
the picture from because the depositional layers are horizontal, but
then the foreground looks slanted.

Yes...it was indeed sloped, which gives the impression of it being
off-level.
I used a bubble level for this, though, so this is how it really apeared.

I frankly can't remember exactly where this was taken. Somewhere in either
Arizona, Utah, New Mexico or Texas. Does that help?

Not the usual sense of layers ( in depth ).

But a very pleasing photo and would count for about 8 layers the way I
count 'em. 11 at a strong stretch.

Cheers,
Alan.

Ya, I counted each line...including very thin ones...and then there are
several other deeper layers only visible in the smaller, lower-left mound...
There are probably tons more that we'll never see (at least not for a few
more million years).

This is one of the few times I might have liked something in the shot
for context. A tree, a tourist, an abandoned car... Then as soon as
I had that context, I'd want it out of there.

I would have guessed the hills east of Grand Junction, CO. There is
some beeautiful country like that around there. But if it was
Arizona, maybe you went through Tuba City or Page? There's at least
one nice spot south of Tuba with hills like that. Too bad it's always
the wrong time of day when I get there, and there's always too many
miles to go.

And I suppose there's hundreds of spots that look that good in the
four corners area. God, I miss the high desert. Tonight more than
usual.

I'll have to post a few other shots taken near that time. Maybe that will
help me place it... When you're driving a couple thousand miles, and a
couple years pass...they can get a bit jumbled in the mind. Someday all
DSLRs will have built-in GPS. Then you could link images to Google Earth
and have quite an interactive viewing... One of these days--
