WTF? From Craigslist.
http://petapixel.com/2014/02/10/rant...pad-portfolio/ -- Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. |

Don't bring fraud to an event costing $15000 to $45000. Well, at last is is semi-honest. He could as well have ripped some shots there and there on the internet, without asking anything of anyone. Most people dont want to pay for photography : after all, it's easy, just push a button isn't ? So they get worth their money. I am not in wedding business, but I wonder what are you supposed to do if you want to start in this business, so you dont have a fat weeding book ? What if you dont have a lot of brothers, sisters, cousins and best friends who are marrying this year ? Noëlle Adam |

I used to be, and one thing you DON'T do is, by implication, pass off someone else's work as your own. Oh, the argument can be made that sample photos on your web page may not be actually marked as your own; and there's a good chance you won't get caught unless your actual work is markedly inferior. If you DO get caught, expect to lose the lawsuit, big time. What you actually do is start at the bottom. First few, you do so cheap they're willing to try an unknown, and work your way up from there. It doesn't take that long. |

He will undoubtably ask for equipment advice as to what apps he should use to supplement his iPhone camera. -- Regards, Savageduck |

I used to be, and one thing you DON'T do is, by implication, pass off someone else's work as your own. I obviously, would not do that. I would not do weddings anyway. But I dont know in US ; here the competition between photographers is ferocious, resulting in many people out of business, and many young photographers willing to work for a slice of the cake and a small tip. They dont make out for their expenses, just always trying to be cheaper and cheaper than the other one. Usually they dont pay their professionnal taxes, trying to stay in a gray zone. And no independant wedding photographer I know can afford to hire an help... What you actually do is start at the bottom. First few, you do so cheap they're willing to try an unknown, and work your way up from there. It doesn't take that long. I saw a friend after a full day he spend at a wedding. He went to it with his bicycle because he was to poor to afford the train ticket and a taxi after that. At the end of the day he was exhausted, and gave away a CD with all the stuff on it. He is a good photographer, made travel books, expos...And he got 100 € for a full day work. (everydays life is more expensive in France, specially in Paris). This was not his start, he was experienced but it was obviously the bottom of things. After that he moved in far countryside , rebuild a village and opened a small business of postcards editing. End of the wedding busines. Noëlle Adam |

WTF? From Craigslist.

Whisky-dave wrote: That's almost common sense, but one thing that occured to me is how about the wedded couple, I assume the original photograpther has the right to use his pictures of them for such promotional purposes would be OK, but what if this person (aka prat) did it ? Would the wedded persons be able to sue or have other courses of action against either the original photographer for handing the images over or the 'prat' who used these pictures as ads. I did mostly commercial stuff and only dabbled in weddings; but typically the photographer retains copyright and most other rights to the images taken, including using them for advertising purposes. It's all there in the contract you have the couple sign... assuming you're not a moron and have them sign one. You could order pads of boilerplate contracts, just like model releases, and I assume you still can. If, as in this case, the happy couple found out the images had been re-used for commercial purposes WITHOUT the rights being assigned properly at each step along the way - yeah, there could be hell to pay. There are ways for a photographer to be a jerk, and ways not to be. In my case, I pointed out that select images might be used for advertising, rather than letting them discover it in the fine print. And, when I closed my studio, I sent each couple the negatives and re-assigned the rights back to them. |
