So?
$229 to build, $499 list. If that is what the market will bear, Apple
is entitled to its profit.

Were they supposed to run it as a loss leader?
I didn't think Apple was some sort of charitable organization.
They are positioning themselves for future price reductions. As with
the iPhone there is a price to pay for being an early adopter.

So, it seems that if you want an iPad you should be able to build your
own for a mere $229!

As for me, I have other things to spend my money on.

It's not the price - it the features and design that matter:

Default Apple raping the sheep (again) - Rich being a moron again

Rich wrote:

Apparently Rich is now a socialist who thinkks that he should have the
right to decide what people charge for their services.

And Rich is also a moron who thinks that electronic devices design and
assemble themselves without any help from people.

Of course, without any software it's just going to be a brick, and
without knowing how to build it you'll just have a pile of components.

If you want to talk about sheep, look at Windows users. Most just use
Windows because its there with no thought at all as to why they are
using it.

the same could be said for Apple users "Oh we used Mac's at school so I use
one at home"
horses for courses.

As far as markups on retail products are concerned, you seem surprised
that Apple does this? Why is your standard for Apple any different than
any other company that operates in the retail sector? The markup on
Netbooks from Sony, HP, etc. has got to be pretty high too, but at least
with Apple, you get access to Apple's world-class tech support service
and their ease of use and unparalleled reliability.

I see you have swallowed the Apple coolaid in one big gulp there :-)
Macs are no more reliable or unreliable than any comparable computer, their
only advantage (if you want to call it that) is the choke hold Apple places
on all software/hardware. ****!! even smoking voids your warrenty as far as
Steve Jobs is concerned http://clicky.me/7eR

Do you object about the markup that soft drink manufacturers get for
their soda? You pay an average of $1.50 for a 20 oz drink, and all it is
is a few cents worth of carbonated water, sweetener, and flavoring. Buy
a hot dog from a street vendor for $1.50 and the markup is probably a
heck of a lot higher than what Apple will get for its iPads.

Imagine that! Retailers mark up the products they sell. Who knew?

There seem to be multiple reports of that, and no Snopes entry or policy
statement on the Apple site, so it seems to indeed be their policy.

I was thinking about an iphone. Every time I think about an Apple product
Apple does something else stupid that makes me rethink the decision.

Bear in mind that Apple used to be run by the former CEO of Pepsi-Cola, so
it has much in common with a soda company.

So, I would be suprised if most things in life can't be brought cheaper
by parts than a ready built thing.
But I'm betting if you had all the parts given to you, yuo wouldn;t be able
to put them together and write the software.
Then there's the nice packaging they'll come in and the shipping costs.

Companies need to make profits for many reasons, you can't really sell at
cost
or below costs unless the item is a loss leader.

Tell you what, YOU build one for $240 and I'll buy as many as you can build
for $300 each. Let me know when you have the first one ready.

Not usually. Most schools use PCs because they are cheaper.
Even here in my university I have a lab of about 90 PCs here typically 3 are
faulty.
Only one mac mini.
They didn't have computers in my school and and teh college that taught me
computing
didn;t have Macs either. I started using them because I found them usable
and intuative
which I found quite strange considering I was running a 3 text based
solutions
which were various implementations of UNIX on PC boxes.

Yes they are, just the lack of virus problems alone prove that.
