Unreadable CD-Rs: I guess ten years is about the limit

that's a possibility, or a scavenging tool that can detect and possibly
fix read errors.

Good idea. Newer ones have more recent tracking/scanning firmware and
may do better.

Also a DVD reader may do better than a CD reader.
