Besides a picture on dpreview and a two sentence coverage on dc.watch,
there is no further information on the Tokina AT-X 17-35mm f/4 PRO FX
lens prototype that was shown at Photokina two weeks ago. A reader
emailed me that this lens will take 77mm filters and is rather compact
in size, similar to the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 DX version.

Tokina already announced a AT-X 16-28mm PRO FX lens few months ago

I am very happy with both the build & IQ with my Tokina AT-X 11-16
f/2.8 PRO DX.
The AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 PRO FX seems to be the FF equivalent of the 11-16 DX.

I think the interesting thing that Tokina has done, has been for the
most part to restrain the zoom range of their lenses. Given that
philosophy, a FF 17-35mm f/4 makes a lot of sense to pair it with their
12-24mm f/4 DX.
So that gives them a DX and FX pair of lenses covering similar FL
equivalents and offering the same f/2.8 & f/4 glass.

It seems they are building a FF range of useful quality lenses which
should be a bargain when compared to the Nikon/Canon/Leica/Zeiss glass.

My only issue with Tokina is the time they take to get the lenses to
the vendors. There were shortages of the 11-16mm for months. None of
the vendors are even listing release dates for the FF lenses. So we
shall have to wait and see if they have anything on the shelves by the
time I would be able to find a good refurbished D700 next year.

....and then there will be the review circus.

I just found this at Adorama,

B&H has no Tokina FF lenses listed yet.

As long as the lens has impeccable quality, which it likely will. A 2x
zoom range and relative slowness make this a very niche product.

Then I guess you don't hold out much hope for primes, and any of those
new fangled cameras with zero zoom range finding a niche.

Unless the market for those niche products is widened.

W/a Tokina lenses tend to have a lot of lateral CA. Not a problem on
cameras with auto CA correction or if you can deal with it in PP.
There's nothing particularly niche about the zoom range/speed, Nikon
have 16-35, Canon 17-40 f4 zooms, both pretty popular. The Canon 17-40l
lenses I've used haven't been great, one very soft on one side at 40mm,
both soft in the corners at the 17mm end, even well stopped down.
The Nikkor I haven't used, but the price is high, it's not small, has a
lot of distortion, and it's got VR which I'd probably never use at that
focal length range.
So IMO there should be a good market for the Tokina lens.

My issue with Tokina is the lack of focus motor to support the non-pro
Nikon DSLRs. Instead of the 11-16mm Tokina, I ended up getting the Tamron
10-24mm, and the image quality is good enough for me. It's light and
compact, and has that extra zoom range over the Tokina. I did have the
Tokina on the camera, and it's a nice lens, and bright as well.

Cheers,
David

It seems Tokina is getting around to solving that problem. The new AF
12-24mm f/4 PRO DX II & AT-X 16-28 f/2.8 PRO FX have an AF motor
specifically to deal with neutered Nikons such as the D60 & D40. They
are also updating, and allegedly improving coatings.

So I think they have been listening, and some of what they are bringing
to the table addresses your issue. I also believe they know their
lenses need to be considered as a reasonable alternative choice for
upgrade with entry level & consumer level DSLR's, and they will lose a
big piece of the market if they do not make the changes.
They already lost a sale to you. You will see DX II updated versions of
some of their other APC lenses over the next 18 months.

They are going to provide some good & interesting competition for the
3rd party lens providers.
....and perhaps Nikon & Canon. If they can get the damn lenses to the vendors.

Excellent news, although the Tamron having the extra wide angle of 10mm
versus 11mm, and the extra zoom range of 10-24mm I don't think I'll be
upgrading my lens any time soon. It seemed ridiculous to be going to the
tele end of the zoom and realising that was 24mm focal length! I have
enjoyed to wide-angle end as well, with some challenges to good
composition, though.

Indeed - it used to be that third-party lenses were a poor substitute for
manufacturer lenses, but Tokina, Tamron and others are proving that it's
no longer the case.

David

Well, they can always rely on those people who just HAVE to have the
latest lens, use it a few times, and fall back on what they use 90% of
the time anyway.

....and that happens. It keeps the used lens market alive. Just ask Rita.
