Does that mean should I contemplate moving up to a dslr I should let a
poll determine my choice.

My sources say yes.

My pollster advises: No.

My only peeve against Nikon is their decision to maintain the old lens
mount for so long (unlike Minolta and Canon who reset) creating no
little amount of confusion on lens/body feature compatibility. I
suppose for those with a long Nikon history it is not a big deal.

Canon took a great deal of flak when they upgraded their lens mount. You
still see the occasional complaint about it, about 20 years later.

The compatibility confusion is a minor issue, though it's somewhat
amusing that the same people that would complain if the physical mount
changed, still can't use some of their older glass on the newer cameras
anyway. More serious, at least for pros, is that the old mount precludes
Nikon from being able to have some lenses than Canon pros take for granted.

If going the Nikon route, get the D80, not the D40x. Within a few
months, that extra $250 will be forgotten and you'll have a much more
capable camera that you'll be happier with. The D40x was severely
defeatured to meet a price point, and to avoid taking sales away from
the D80.

i'm glad you have $250 you can so easily 'forget about.' what if the
user doesn't want any of the features you think are so important? what
if they have a budget? maybe they'd rather save the $250 instead of
getting features they don't need. or maybe they'd prefer spending the
$250 on a flash, another lens, or a new printer.

What you need to understand is that you don't want to be changing camera
bodies a year down the road when you discover that a key feature, whose
value you didn't understand at the time of purchase, is missing.

that can happen with any camera. what if they buy a d80 and realize
that they want 5fps or gps input or metering with manual focus lenses?
then they'd need to upgrade too.

ever think that not everyone needs every single feature?? apparently
not.

nikon is not lagging badly. the only issue right now is no full-frame
and that is expected to change.

The lack of full frame is hurting Nikon in a big way. Not because sales
of the full frame cameras are so great, but because they appear to have
no upgrade path for the prosumer who is in the process of building up a
collection of lenses, flashes, etc., in the expectation that FF prices
will fall to a level he or she can afford.

bull****. nikon's sales are increasing. canon is currently hurting,
especially with the 1d mark iii debacle. full frame is not a panacea
and not everyone wants it.

sigh. nikon's lens mount does NOT preclude them from making lenses
that canon pros take for granted. nikon, for whatever reason, chose
not to make exotic limited market lenses.

SLRs lead digital camera sales surge
"http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-6173084.html"

106 million compact digital cameras sold vs. 5 million DSLRs sold. Guess
which cameras are more popular.

You have to look at the growth rates, not just the raw numbers.

Let's see: DSLRs grew by 1.5 million units, compact digital cameras grew
by 12 million units.

Hint: it's easy to grow a lot in % terms if you are a dwarf.

There are probably more camera phones than either. But then who cares
about that when it's the phone that makes the money? DSLRs are
profitable, P&S cameras are being given away thanks to high
competition. So much so that Kodak, which made more than anyone,
didn't make any money off it.

Canon which makes up for the larger share of the market. They are both

Are they? I used to think that DSLR bodies are essentially given away
and the manufacturers make money with the lenses.

P&S cameras are being given away thanks to high
competition.

Can you prove that compact digitals are sold at a loss?
