For that budget, Nikon Coolpix 5400 or Canon Powershot G5. You can't go
wrong with either.

I too like Canon equipment. I own an older G2 and EOS 10D.

First and foremost, what are you going to do with the pictures? Are they
merely going to be put on the computer, emailed to grandma, or will they be
enlarged and printed.

If you plan to print up to 8 by 10 or larger, a 4 megapixel camera is a bare
minimum. The more megapixels, the larger you can print. More importantly,
the larger you can print a heavily cropped picture.

If you took a 3 meg photo, cropped it 50% and made it into a 4 by 6, you'd
be happy; you'd hate it in an 8 by 10.

In the price range you are talking of, either a Canon G5 or a Nikon 5700
would fit the bill. Also pay attention to the type of memory that the camera
will take. Compact Flash (CF) is what these two take, is readily available,
and is cheapest per meg of storage.

No specific suggestions, just reassurance: Lots of choices, many
factors to consider -- but in the end, no matter *what* digital camera
you purchase in that price range, you'll probably be delighted with it.

(One idea: buy one in the $120-$150 range, and see what you like and
don't like before you make the bigger purchase.)
