It seems that there are a few stores up in the NY and NJ area that are
running this scam... They will list the cameras at a very good price and
then ask you to call to confirm the order... They will then try to sell
you ridiculously priced "accessories", some of them what the camera
normally comes with anyway... If you insist that you only want the
camera body for the advertised price, they will then tell you that it is
an overseas model and all the menus and even the software is in
Chinese... If you tell them that this doesn't matter and all you want is
just the body since you already have everything else, they will claim
that it is on backorder and will probably take 6-8 weeks for it to come
in... They'll then offer to "upgrade" you to a different camera which
they will claim to be "just as good if not better" for a few hundred
dollars more... I'm not sure what it is about that area that seems to
attract this type of scammer... Probably has something to say about the
personal ethics of the people that live up there, I guess... Perhaps
when you crowd that many people into that small of an area, the result
is a higher percentage of morally challenged individuals... Some become
true criminals, some just run shady businesses...

If you find a site that lists them with good reviews, it is more than
likely because the company had its employees post bogus reviews... If
you did far enough into the previous reviews, you'll find the ones that
show their bait-and-switch and other scam tactics...

My favorite paragraph on sites like this is:

1) For your protection, all orders that are submitted to us through our
website are subjected to a thorough verification procedure before shipping.
Often, this process includes contacting you via telephone or email to
confirm your order and delivery information. Please be sure to include a
phone number and email address so that we can contact you if necessary.

If necessary? Ha! The upsale* call is guaranteed to occur.

* Often call bait-and-switch or bait-and-stuff.

Along with the saying, "You get what you pay for" I would like to add
following variation for you to consider:

"You don't get what you don't pay for."

In other words... Don't...do...it.

You will NOT be happy with the result of sending them your creddit card
information. Trust me. Just don't do it.

Because of my web site picturing all of these characters I periodically get
contacted by disgruntled former employees. I wrote up notes on what the
last one said:

He and his brother used to work for xxxxx. He was Dir of Business
Development. His brother was VP of Marketing. They both quit the same day.
The only thing new (that I didn't have listed) is xxxxx is a semi-rogue
comparison engine owned by xxxx (which I do picture). They also own xxxx
LLC. He mentioned Axxx Rxxxxx. He says Spitzer was onto them, so they moved
from Brooklyn to NJ to avoid scrutiny. He says they all are family and
friends and have known each other for a long time. They all hung out
together in High School. He says they all have mini-mansions in Deal NJ. He
says it is a tight cicle. He says he had to work for them for 4-5 months
before they opened up. He says lots of shady stuff was taking place. He
says his biggest accomplishment was getting Circuit City to be on xxxx. He
says it is hard to get the legitimate ones to get onto an engine with the
sleazy ones.

You need to do nothing more than scroll down the list of RECOMMENDED
accessories - like the battery they don't send you with the $499 body,
which costs $199, or the charger (even more!) or the optional
CompactFlash card at $399 for a relatively slow 2GB 'professional'
unbranded bit of garbage which is currently worth $30 max.

I know that bait and switch schemes are illegal and prosecuted
vigorusly here in SC - in fact they have a three man team that
specialized in car dealerships. I wonder if New Jersey has anything
similar? Probably not considering the calibre of their politicians.
