I wonder why the Pro large format printer market is dominated by HP?

I know of several labs offering large format inkjet prints and almost
every one of them is using Epson 9600 or 9800's. All of these labs
also have Chromira or LightJet laser printers and typically sell the
Epson prints for the same or slightly higher prices. I don't know of
any such labs with HPs.

I know maybe 50 professional photographers who print wide format at
home and every single one of them uses Epsons, typically the
4000/7600/9600 series and more recently the 4800/7800/9800. I've never
met anyone who uses an HP large format printer for this. Maybe I don't
get out enough but I'm pretty certain Epson dominates this market for
fine art printing. HP's are more for CAD, I think.

Did not intend to wind you up. The knowledge you share on these
newsgroups is invaluable. I have no hard data as to marketshare.
In the UK HP is a very strong brand with excellent backup. HP
pricing against Epson seems more competitive here than in the
US. Designjet Inks are also lower cost per cc than Epson.

No problem, Deryck. Just for the record, it was
your claim ("HP dominates...") that caused me to
respond.

My view on all this is similar to Bill Hilton's (see
his posts on this thread.)

I've owned more Epsons than any other brand, and
spent more time on Epson lists than others.

I was at a seminar/conference on photo-quality
printing technology in May of 2004 and most of
the references to WF printers were taken from, or
directed at the Epson line.

Henry Wilhelm was there, as was Nick Helmuth,
and I was able to chat with both. Nick is in your
camp. Hardly ever says anything good about Epsons.

Never mind all this bullcrap. Let's talk about what really counts. Will it
squeak after a couple of months? Will it start picking up more than one
sheet of paper at a time a couple of months down the road? Will it start
skewing the images? Will it start leaving the last inch of a picture
incomplete? Can it be repaired locally or still have to be returned to the
factory just so they can tell you you'd be better off buying the next "New"
printer they have?
If incompetence in quality floats your boat, set sail my friend. Set sail.

Obviously you have never used a pro level printer. I still have an
Epson 9000, has its faw but breakdowns aren't one of them. I have had 3
sevice visits over the 6 years I have had the printer. One was just a
tweak from an earlier visit. I would expect the same out of an Epson
4800. Yes you pay for them, but they just keep working. High end HP's
or Rolands I would expect the same durability. A $500 R1800, expect 3
good years, the 2400 about the same.
I have had a crappy job done by a Chromira printer, which is why I
started printing commercially.
High end printing is getting much easier with published profiles, and
solid ink sets.

Printing is in my blood. I used to set type for my father when I was only
knee high. His brother was vice-president of a printing firm up until
retirement. My brother is a graphic artist and my other brother has a 9002
business in New Hampshire servicing all makes of printers, fax and plain
paper copiers.
